Portrait of Livia Arconati, inscribed:’ANNA JOSEPHA MONIALIS PRO/FESSA IN MON: RO: S. Ti. AUGUSTINI / P. N. FILIA CO MITIS JOSEPH MARIAE / ARCONATI IN SAECULO LIVIA’, oil on canvas, 203 x 120 cm, framed
Certificate: Dr. Daniele Benati, 2 June 1999. Daniele Benati has identified the colourful and elegant portrait as an ‘admirable work by Pier Francesco Cittadini, the renowned Bolognese artist, who in his native town developed into Guido Reni’s most liberal follower’.
Literature: Enciclopedia Treccani (as an autograph work by Pier Franesco Cittadini, called Il Milanese).Anna Giuseppa, called Livia, became a nun at the convent of Sant’Agostino, of aristocratic origins, she was the daughter of Count Giuseppe Maria Arconati. Since the sitter is dressed here in secular clothes, the painting must have been executed before Livia Arconati entered the convent of Sant’Agostino as Anna Giuseppa. The name Arconati is recorded in Lombardy.
